BREXIT - Strategic Considerations for the Future Governance of the EU 22/09/2016 Ambassador Antonio Martins da Cruz: Former foreign minister of Portugal

On September 22nd 2016, Ambassador Antonio Martins da Cruz, former foreign minister of Portugal, joined the IPLI Foundation to participate in a Paris Speaker Series Symposium. Students, researchers and alumni from Sciences Po Paris were invited to join the ambassador to discuss the implications of BREXIT and its impact on the future governance of the EU.

Ambassador de Cruz offered his analysis of the current state of negotiations between the U.K. and the EU on the BREXIT issue.  Of note, the ambassador provided his assessment of when the U.K. might consider triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon treaty which would begin the formal process of the U.K. withdrawal from the EU.  In addition, the ambassador provided his thoughts on the implications that BREXIT would have on European economics and security.  In conclusion, ambassador da Cruz judged that BREXIT would unfortunately have an overall deleterious impact on the future of the EU and that the departure of the U.K. would lead to a re-balancing of power within the EU which would tilt the center of gravity further towards central Europe.
