Innovation in Global Energy Security – Desertec – Harnessing Renewable Energy from the World’s Deserts 07/11/2014 Dr. Oliver Steinmetz

On November 7th, 2014, Dr. Oliver Steinmetz (Co-Founder and Member of the Supervisory Board of Desertec) joined us at Ambassade de Bourgogne and presented Desertec concept and initiatives. Desertec was born as a response to the most pressing challenges of the 21st century: energy supply and climate protection.

Desertec's policy proposal is that solar energy has by far the largest potential to meet these challenges: “Within 6 hours deserts receive more energy from the sun than humankind consumes within a year.”, says Gerhard Knies, member of the German Association CLUB OF ROME. As a matter of fact, Desertec scientific studies show that a collector area (surface for solar power plants) of only 300 x 300 km in any desert of the world could cover the electricity demand of the entire world.

With this in mind, Desertec has conducted public, political and academic initiatives in order to assure a fast global implementation of the Desertec concept. As an NGO, they were successful in opening doors based on credibility, in promoting citizen-to-citizen communication and in generating acceptance in partner countries civil societies. The most important lesson learned from this process was that joint ventures between an NGO and Industry are challenging and require very well planned strategies.

The debate with the participants was very rich and specialized since most of the audience was composed by “Global Energy and Sustainability” concentration students. It regarded the latest technological breaktroughs and their dissemination prospects, as well as the description of good practices in developing countries.
