Turkey - Impact of the failed coup attempt and implications for regional governance 17/10/2016 Dr. Bayram Balcı, Research Engineer at the Centre national de recherche scientifique (CNRS) and Researcher at the Centre de Recherches Internationales (CERI).

On October 17th 2016, Dr. Bayram Balcı joined the IPLI Foundation to participate in a Paris Speaker Series Symposium. Students, researchers and alumni from Sciences Po Paris were invited to join Dr. Balcı to discuss current events related to Turkey following the failed July 2016 coup attempt and the impact that it continues to have both in Turkey and internationally.

Dr. Balcı began his presentation by providing an overview of the evolution of Turkey's Justice and Development party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi) (AK Parti) from when it gained power in 2002 to the present.  Dr. Balcı also gave a brief overview of the history of the Turkish Republic and cited the historical legacy of the Ottoman empire and the influence that it has had on the Middle East, echoes of which continue today.  Dr. Balcı then discussed the timeline of events surrounding the failed July 2016 coup in Turkey and also offered his analysis on how the potential implications of this event could impact Turkey and the surrounding region in the future.
